A charity is a nonprofit public or private organization that promotes the good of the community. There is everything from local charities that focus on the immediate community by providing homeless shelters, to international associations that raise funds to help feed children all over the world. Some people are not wealthy enough to donate funds, but as an alternative can give their energy to helping a cause and in turn bettering their community.

Depending on where a charity is located in the United States and what each state law declares about charitable organizations has a lot to say about the type of group it is. Some are private foundations that are completely tax exempt while others are public organizations. For instance, a grantmaker is an organization that generally raises funds but then allocates them to operating foundations that carry out charitable activities.
